Tax Services: What McManus McCabe Covers
Personal Income Tax (PAYE & Self-Assessed)
McManus McCabe prepares and files Irish income tax returns for individuals under both PAYE and self-assessment. For PAYE employees, we review your tax position to identify unclaimed reliefs and credits - medical expenses, working from home relief, flat-rate expenses, pension contributions, rent tax credit, and more. Many PAYE taxpayers are due refunds they have not claimed.
For self-assessed individuals - sole traders, landlords, company directors, professionals - we manage the full annual compliance cycle: bookkeeping support, preparation of accounts, income tax return preparation and Revenue filing, preliminary tax planning to manage cash flow, and year-round advisory.
Capital Gains Tax (CGT)
CGT applies to gains realised on the disposal of assets - property (other than your principal private residence), shares, business interests, and other investments. The standard CGT rate in Ireland is 33%, making professional planning around CGT a significant financial consideration for any taxpayer selling assets of material value.
McManus McCabe advises on CGT exposure before you sell, identifies available reliefs and exemptions (principal private residence relief, entrepreneur relief, retirement relief, annual CGT exemption), prepares and files CGT returns, and manages the payment deadlines - 15 December for disposals in the first 11 months of the year, 31 January for disposals in December.
Capital Acquisitions Tax (CAT) - Inheritance & Gift Tax
Capital Acquisitions Tax (CAT) is the Irish tax on inheritances and gifts. The rate is 33% on the taxable value above the applicable threshold. The Group A threshold (parent to child) is currently EUR335,000; Group B (certain relatives) EUR32,500; Group C (all others) EUR16,250. CAT thresholds aggregate over a lifetime, meaning a gift received in 2010 reduces the threshold available on a later inheritance.
McManus McCabe provides CAT planning for families managing succession, prepares and files IT38 (CAT return), advises on tax-efficient gifting strategies and agricultural/business property relief, and represents clients in Revenue queries on CAT matters.
Corporation Tax
McManus McCabe provides corporation tax compliance and advisory services for Irish limited companies. This includes preparation of the CT1 (corporation tax return), computation of tax liabilities, identifying available reliefs (R&D tax credit, knowledge development box, capital allowances, section 481 film credit where applicable), and planning around the timing of dividend distributions and remuneration.
The standard Irish corporation tax rate is 12.5% on trading income. The 15% minimum effective rate under Pillar Two applies to groups with annual turnover above EUR750 million - most McManus McCabe clients remain subject to 12.5% on trading income.
VAT
VAT registration, return preparation and filing, VAT refund applications, advice on VAT liability of supplies, and representation in Revenue VAT enquiries. McManus McCabe handles VAT compliance for sole traders, limited companies, and property transactions (which carry specific VAT rules under the Irish VAT Act).

Tax Consultancy: Advisory Beyond Compliance
McManus McCabe provides tax consultancy advice across the major Irish tax planning opportunities for private clients and owner-managed businesses:
- Inheritance and succession planning - structuring transfers of property and business assets to minimise CAT, using business property relief, agricultural relief, and the section 72 insurance policy
- CGT planning before asset sales - timing, relief optimisation, share restructuring
- Pension contributions as a tax planning tool - the tax efficiency of pension contributions remains one of the most significant reliefs available to Irish taxpayers
- Remuneration structuring for company directors - salary vs dividend vs pension contribution
- Property tax planning - rental income, section 23 relief (historical), CAT on inherited property
- Business sale and exit planning - entrepreneur relief, retirement relief, share valuation
Revenue Audit & Compliance Intervention Support
If you receive a Revenue audit notification, a Revenue Compliance Intervention letter (Level 1, Level 2, or Level 3), or a Revenue expression of doubt, McManus McCabe can represent you throughout the process. Revenue compliance interventions range from a straightforward letter requesting confirmation of a specific item through to a full field audit.
The most important step when you receive any Revenue correspondence is to contact a qualified adviser immediately. A qualifying disclosure - made before a Revenue investigation commences - can significantly reduce any penalty exposure. McManus McCabe has extensive experience of managing Revenue audit and compliance processes for both personal and business clients.
Tax Consultant FAQs
-
What does a tax consultant do that an accountant doesn't?
All McManus McCabe partners are both Chartered Accountants and tax practitioners - the distinction is not one of credentials but of service scope. Accountancy covers financial statements, bookkeeping, and compliance. Tax consultancy covers proactive planning, structuring of transactions, and optimisation of your tax position. McManus McCabe provides both under one roof. See tax-advisor-vs-consultant for a full explanation. -
How much does a tax consultant cost in Dublin?
McManus McCabe charges on a fixed-fee or hourly basis depending on the service. A PAYE tax review typically costs EUR150-EUR350 as a one-off fixed fee. An annual income tax return for a self-assessed individual runs from EUR400-EUR800 depending on complexity. CGT and CAT returns are typically EUR300-EUR600. Contact us for a specific quote. A full Irish fee guide is at /tax-advisor-cost-ireland/. -
Do I need a tax consultant or a tax advisor?
In Ireland, these terms are used interchangeably. There is no statutory distinction between a 'tax consultant' and a 'tax advisor'. What matters is whether the person is qualified: a Chartered Accountant (ACA/FCA) with a tax practice, or a member of the Irish Tax Institute (CTA or AITI designation), provides the highest standard of professional tax advice. See /tax-advisor-vs-consultant/ for the full comparison. -
Can McManus McCabe help with Revenue queries and audits?
Yes. Revenue audit and compliance intervention representation is a core service. If you have received a Revenue letter, do not respond without professional advice. Contact McManus McCabe and we will advise you on the appropriate response, whether a qualifying disclosure is warranted, and manage the Revenue correspondence on your behalf.
